Lovran is a small town on the Opatija Riviera, about 7 km south of Opatija on the eastern coast of Istria. It has a compact medieval old quarter, a seafront promenade called the Lungomare, and a speciality that sets it apart from every other Adriatic town: chestnuts. The surrounding hillsides are covered in sweet chestnut forests, and the annual Marunada (Chestnut Festival) in October draws visitors from across Croatia. The town has a faintly Habsburg air, with early 20th-century villas alongside older stone buildings. We think it's a more relaxed and affordable alternative to Opatija.
Why Stay in Lovran
- Lungomare promenade — the seaside walking path connects Lovran to Opatija along 12 km of coastline. It's one of the best seafront walks in Croatia.
- Old town character — the medieval quarter has a town gate, narrow lanes, and the Church of St George with 14th-century frescoes. It's small but genuine.
- Chestnut culture, sweet chestnuts feature in local desserts (chestnut cake, chestnut purée, chestnut ice cream) and the October festival is a real draw.
- Honest caveat. the beaches are rocky platforms and concrete bathing areas rather than sand or pebble. The town is small with limited restaurant choice. It sits on the busy coastal road, which brings traffic noise.
Things to Do in Lovran
Walk the Lungomare from Lovran to Opatija. The 12 km coastal path passes through parks, past old villas, and along rocky shores. It takes about 2.5 hours one way, or you can turn back at any point. The stretch through Lovran's own waterfront is particularly pleasant.
Explore the old town. It's compact (10-15 minutes to walk through) but the frescoes in St George's church, the Stubica tower, and the harbour view make it worthwhile. In the evening, cafés in the main square fill with locals.
Hike on Učka, the mountain behind town. The peak (1,401 m) offers panoramic views of the Kvarner islands and, on clear days, across to the Italian Alps. The ascent from Lovran takes about 3-4 hours. Less energetic visitors can drive to the Poklon pass viewpoint (about 20 minutes).
Opatija (7 km north) adds more restaurants, cafés, and cultural options. The Opatija parks and Angiolina Garden are worth seeing. For beaches, Mošćenička Draga (10 km south) has a pebbly beach in a more natural setting.
