Zaostrog is a small village on the southern Makarska Riviera, for families who want a home with a pool on the pebble-beach coast. It is quiet and well away from the airport, though: Split Airport is about two hours by car.
Zaostrog is tiny, with around 220 residents, and comes in two parts: an older village under a steep limestone face of Biokovo and a newer strip along the shore. It belongs to Gradac municipality, between Makarska and Ploče, on a coast of long pebble beaches. Olive growing is prominent in the area. The Franciscan monastery of St Mary, more than 500 years old, has a museum, a gallery and a library of over 30,000 titles, and the poet monk Andrija Kačić Miošić spent part of his working life here. The homes are grouped tightly together; most sleep around five, nearly half have a private pool and nearly all have air-conditioning.

Split Airport is the usual arrival point, about two hours away by car. Buses link Makarska and Zaostrog in around 35 minutes, with a few services a day. A car makes trips along the Riviera and up towards Biokovo much simpler.
