Trilj suits larger groups who want a house on the Cetina river, about 30 km from Split. Rafting, canyoning and guided river fishing are all on offer around the town. It is an inland river town, so every swim in the sea involves a drive to the coast.
Trilj is a small river town in inland Dalmatia, with fewer than 2,000 people in the town itself. It is nicknamed the town of bridges, most of them built in the 1960s, and it has been a crossing since the Romans built a stone bridge over the Cetina here. On Gardun hill, about a kilometre south, are the remains of Tilurium, a Roman legion camp. The local museum holds finds from the site. Food is river food: frogs and crabs from the Cetina, then patišpanja, a sponge cake. The homes are spread around the town and the countryside nearby.
A ruined 15th-century fortress about 3 km downstream, overlooking the Cetina canyon, reached by a path off the Trilj to Bisko road.
A fort about 8 km from town at 705 metres, first recorded in 1371, which guarded a mountain pass leading to Bosnia.
The river winds through its canyon to Omiš at its mouth; rafting and canyoning trips run here among caves and waterfalls.
Fly to Split Airport, around 50 minutes away by car. Buses run via Split bus station but take two and a half hours or more, so a car is the realistic option, especially with homes spread around the area.
Not on foot. Trilj is an inland town on the Cetina river, about 30 km from Split, so beach days mean a drive down to the coast. Most homes here have a private pool, but check each listing.
Yes. Rafting and canyoning run in the Cetina canyon, which has caves and waterfalls, and guides offer river fishing too. Canoeing, horse riding, cycling and hiking are also on offer around the town.
Because the Cetina is crossed so often here. Most of the current bridges went up in the 1960s, but the habit is Roman: the Romans built a stone bridge, Pons Tilurium, on the Cetina, with their legion camp on Gardun hill nearby.
Around 50 minutes by car. Public transport means changing at Split bus station and takes well over two hours, so hiring a car at the airport makes sense.
