Betina is a boatbuilding village on the north-west side of Murter island, joined to the mainland by a drawbridge at Tisno. The island's beaches are mostly rocky, with the sandy coves on the far south-western shore, and most homes are compact places for two to four.
Betina has about 700 residents and a wooden boatbuilding tradition that goes back to the mid-18th century. Its signature boat is the gajeta, a wooden sailing craft of five to eight metres, and the Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding tells the story. Murter, the largest settlement on the island, has around two thousand people and is where the Kornati National Park is managed from. The island is low and small, with its highest point, Raduč, at 125 metres. The homes sit tightly around Betina, nearly all with air conditioning and most with a garden, though few have a pool. Outside summer, expect a working boatbuilding village rather than a resort.
The island's largest settlement, and the town from which the Kornati National Park is managed.
An archipelago of roughly 140 islands, islets and reefs; the national park covers its southern part and has its base in Murter.
Around 35 minutes by car from Murter; the Cathedral of St James is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Krka National Park is about 18 km north of the city.
Town at the drawbridge that joins Murter island to the mainland, about seven kilometres from Betina.
Šibenik has no airport. Split Airport is about 50 km from Šibenik and Zadar Airport about 70 km, and Murter is around 35 minutes by car beyond Šibenik. A car is the practical choice, though the line 51 bus runs from Šibenik to Betina three times a day.
Summer is the time for swimming from the rocky beaches and the sandy coves on the south-western shore, and Betina's Zora folklore association holds a folklore festival every summer. Outside summer the village goes quiet, so check opening times for the shipbuilding museum, restaurants and boat trips before you plan around them. Nearly all the homes have air conditioning.
Mostly not. Murter has rocky beaches and some sandy ones, and the sandy coves sit along the south-western coast, while Betina lies on the north-western side of the island.
Cross the short drawbridge at Tisno from the mainland, then follow the island road to Betina, about seven kilometres on. From Šibenik, the line 51 bus also runs to Betina a few times a day.
It is. Betina is one of a few remaining centres of small wooden shipbuilding on the Croatian Adriatic, building everything from a kaić of about four metres to cargo ships, and it has a museum of wooden shipbuilding.
The Kornati National Park is managed from the town of Murter on the same island, so it is the natural starting point. Check boat operators for departures and dates.
Quiet, yes. It had 718 residents at the 2021 census, so expect a small harbour village where the evening is a walk and a meal, not a resort strip.
