Vrboska suits couples who want a quiet harbour village on Hvar's north coast, with a pebbly beach at Soline about a kilometre away. Its small bridges earn it the name Little Venice. Most homes here are small, and the beach is pebble rather than sand.
Vrboska is a village of around 540 people in the Jelsa municipality, set along a deep, narrow bay ringed by pine woods, vineyards and olive groves, on the north-eastern edge of the Stari Grad Plain. It grew as a 15th-century fishing harbour, and small stone and wooden bridges cross the inlet. Its fortified church of St Mary was rebuilt as a church-fortress after the Turkish raid of 1571. The village also has a yachting marina. The homes are close together near the village; most suit couples, and the largest takes a big group. Out of season it settles back to its year-round population.
The town that gives its name to Vrboska's municipality, with an adventure park offering paintball, archery and beach volleyball, and one of the island's two petrol stations nearby.
A mostly uninhabited hamlet 350 metres above sea level, about 10 km east of Jelsa, near the Grapčeva cave, open only on guided tours.
Founded by Greek settlers in 384 BC, with Tvrdalj, the fortified home of the poet Petar Hektorović, and the car ferry from Split docking nearby.
Fly to Split. Allow around two and a half hours from Split airport by bus and ferry. The Jadrolinija car ferry from Split takes about two hours and docks near Stari Grad, and a car is useful for reaching beaches and villages around the island.
Summer is the main season, with weekly klapa singing during the village's cultural summer, surf schools and cycling paths through the fields. Easter brings the Za Križen procession, which runs from Maundy Thursday evening into the next morning.
The name comes from its small bridges. Built in stone and wood over the centuries, they cross the water in a village that grew up as a fishing harbour in the 15th century.
Pebble. Soline Bay, about a kilometre from the village centre, has a spacious pebbly beach with facilities that work well for families with small children.
Plenty for a village. The fortified church of St Mary is a church-fortress rebuilt after 1571, the parish church of St Lawrence holds paintings by Venetian masters, and there is a fishermen's museum.
Pick Vrboska for a smaller, quieter inlet village and Soline's pebble beach. Stari Grad is the bigger, older town, founded by the Greeks, with the car ferry from Split docking close by.
