Gdinj suits couples who want a hilltop village on eastern Hvar, a long way from Hvar town on the road from the Sućuraj ferry. Homes are small, mostly one bedroom, and spread over several kilometres in the area around the village. There are no pools, and you need a car for almost everything.
Gdinj is a village of about 120 people, set at 361 metres in the Jelsa municipality. The D116, the island road that runs 77.9 km from the Sućuraj ferry port to Hvar town, passes straight through it. Below the village on the south coast is Medvidina bay, reached by car or by boat from Gdinj. The homes are spread across several kilometres in the area around Gdinj rather than in one cluster, so check where each one sits before you book. There is very little in the village itself, so plan on driving for shops and restaurants, and expect quiet evenings.
A bay on Hvar's south coast at the foot of Gdinj, reached by car or by boat, and suited to a quiet day by the water.
The smallest town on Hvar and the centre of the east of the island, with the Jadrolinija ferry to Drvenik taking about 30 minutes.
Gdinj belongs to Jelsa municipality, and Jelsa lies on the D116 with a daily Krilo boat to Split that takes about 2 hours 40 minutes.
Fly to Split. With a car, drive down the coast to Drvenik and take the Jadrolinija ferry to Sućuraj, about 30 minutes, then follow the D116, which passes through Gdinj. Without one, the daily boat from Split to Jelsa plus a taxi takes over three and a half hours from Split airport. A car is essential here.

It can work for small families who like quiet. Most homes here have one bedroom and none has a pool, and few sleep eight or more, so larger groups have very little choice.
A long drive. Hvar town is at the far western end of the D116, the 77.9 km island road that starts at Sućuraj and passes through Gdinj, so allow plenty of time for a day trip there.
