Donje Selo is a small farming village on the island of Šolta, a base for families who want a garden and a quiet week. The village itself has little tourist infrastructure, so expect to drive or take the island bus for anything else.
Donje Selo means lower village. It is a farming village of around 160 people on the north-western edge of the fertile Donje polje field, beside the road between Maslinica and the middle of the island. St Martin's church was built at its southern edge in the second half of the 14th century, and the fishing harbour of Donja Krušica belongs to the village. Small local winemakers sell wine directly here. Most homes have a garden, fewer than half have a private pool, and they are spread over several kilometres of countryside around the village.
A fishing centre with a sheltered harbour, exposed only to north-westerly winds, on the road from Donje Selo.
The island's main settlement, inland, with a market where local wine is sold, 2.9 km from Donje Selo.
The island's main port, with car ferries and catamarans to Split and buses from the port to Donje Selo.
Šolta is reached by ferry from Split, landing at Rogač or Stomorska, and buses run from the Rogač port to Donje Selo. The homes are spread around the village, so a car makes the island far easier to use.
By ferry across the Split Channel to Rogač or Stomorska, then onward by road. Buses run from the Rogač ferry port to Donje Selo, though a car gives much more freedom around the island.
Yes. Small local winemakers sell wine directly in the village. DNA analysis links the island's Dobričić grape to Zinfandel, though nearly all of the island's wine is made for growers' own use.
Pick Donje Selo for gardens and farmland, set beside the road between Maslinica and the island's centre. Pick Maslinica if you want to be by a fishing harbour that is sheltered from all but north-westerly winds.
Mostly yes, because most homes here have a garden and many sleep six or more. The village has little tourism of its own, so plan on driving for restaurants and the sea.
