Voeren suits couples and small families who want quiet Flemish valley country on the Dutch border, about 20 minutes' drive from Maastricht. Homes here sleep up to six, so check each listing for pool details. Public transport is sparse and slow, so plan on bringing or hiring a car.
Voeren is a Dutch-speaking municipality of six villages and around 4,000 people, cut off from the rest of Flanders, with the Netherlands to the north and the Walloon province of Liège to the south. It is the only part of Flemish Limburg on the right bank of the Meuse, and its territory is essentially the valley of the Voer, a small stream that joins the Meuse at Eijsden near Maastricht. 's-Gravenvoeren is the largest village. At Teuven, a second stream, the Gulp, runs through a narrow valley of woods, meadows, farmland and orchards. The homes have two bedrooms as the norm; check each listing for pool details and air conditioning.
The Dutch city is about 20 minutes from Voeren by car; bus 397 from Kanne to 's-Gravenvoeren takes over an hour.
Across the Dutch border, the Gulp from Teuven meets the Geul at Gulpen, where a motte-and-bailey castle overlooks the confluence.
A castle at 's-Gravenvoeren, the most populous of Voeren's six villages.
One of the six Voeren villages, with its own church and castle.
Maastricht is about 20 minutes' drive from Voeren. Public transport is slow: bus 397 from Kanne to 's-Gravenvoeren takes over an hour, and the quicker alternative via Visé needs a bus and a train. A car is the practical choice for a stay here.
It is an exclave. Voeren belonged to Liège province until 1963, when it moved to Limburg, and the Netherlands and Wallonia separate it from the rest of Flanders. Dutch is the official language, with facilities for French speakers.
Very. The drive takes about 20 minutes, and the Voer, which gives the area its name, flows into the Meuse at Eijsden near Maastricht. About a quarter of Voeren's residents are foreign nationals, mostly Dutch.
Narrow and green. The Gulp is a fast, oxygen-rich trout stream that passes Teuven before crossing into the Netherlands, through deciduous woods, meadows, orchards and old eroded dirt tracks.
For smaller families, yes. Homes here sleep two to six with two bedrooms as the norm; check each listing for a pool and air conditioning before you book.
