Axams suits couples and small families who want the Axamer Lizum slopes and Innsbruck about 10 km away. Most homes sleep two to six; check each listing if you want a garden. It is a real village of around 6,000 people, not a ski resort, so you travel up to the lifts.
Axams is a large village at 874 m in the low mountain country south-west of Innsbruck, with the Kalkkögel peaks and the Axamer Lizum ski area to the south, inside its own boundary. Large old farmsteads and several chapels stand around the parish church, and most of the village is walkable. The homes are spread around the village rather than in one spot. Evenings bring a few restaurants serving Tyrolean food, a pizzeria and a late bar. There is a leisure centre with indoor and outdoor pools, and a farmers' market for local dairy, meat and bread. From late October the huts up on the mountain close, and the cable cars stop until the ski season opens in early December.
The ski area that hosted the alpine events of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, with about 40 km of mostly intermediate pistes.
The Lizum's highest point at 2,340 m, where the summit restaurant has the largest covered sun terrace in Austria.
The Tyrolean capital lies about 10 km north-east, with buses from Axams roughly every 30 minutes and weekend night buses.
Innsbruck Airport is about 12 km from Axams. Take bus F to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof and change to line 4162, which runs via Götzens and Birgitz. There is no railway, but the buses are frequent, so a car is useful rather than essential.
Winter brings the Lizum's pistes and freeride terrain, and summer turns it into a starting point for hikes and mountain bike routes to the Götzner Alm and the Kemater Alm. Avoid late October to early December, when huts and cable cars shut.
Close, but you need transport. The Lizum lies south of the village inside Axams municipality, joined to it by a road built in 1962 to 1963, and a shuttle bus runs to Innsbruck on operating days.
Easily. Bus 4162 runs from Axams to Innsbruck roughly every 30 minutes from early morning until about midnight, and weekend night buses run too.
For walkers and mountain bikers, yes. The Lizum is the base for many hikes and mountain tours, and the village leisure centre has an outdoor pool and beach volleyball.
Its ski area did. The Axamer Lizum hosted most alpine skiing events at the 1964 Winter Olympics and the same events again in 1976.
