Altenmarkt im Pongau gives families a market town with a station, plus Zauchensee's World Cup slopes 10 km to the south. It sits inside the Ski amadé lift pass area. Most homes sleep around six, so large groups have little choice.
Altenmarkt is a small market town of just over 4,000 people at 842 metres, in a wide valley about 65 km south-east of Salzburg. It is known for winter tourism and for the Atomic ski factory, and the ski racers Hermann Maier and Michael Walchhofer are among its best-known names. The homes are in and around the town. The deanery church of Unserer Lieben Frau Geburt and the Hoamathaus, a local museum in a house built around 1408 for miners, are the sights in town, and the Erlebnis-Therme Amadé spa is the rainy-day option. Evenings are low-key. Most homes sleep six or so, with a sauna and a garden; check each listing.
The high resort at 1,350 metres, about 10 km south of Altenmarkt, a World Cup venue with the steeper, sportier skiing of the area.
The gentler, family-friendly slopes shared with Radstadt, part of the Salzburger Sportwelt within Ski amadé.
Fly to Salzburg: the drive from the airport to Altenmarkt takes around 40 minutes. Without a car, bus 2 runs from the airport to Salzburg Hbf, then trains with one change at Bischofshofen reach Altenmarkt station on the Enns valley line in about two and a half hours.
Winter is the main season, with 760 km of pistes in the Salzburger Sportwelt and Ski amadé area around the town. In summer Altenmarkt-Zauchensee is a certified walking village with 195 km of signed paths, plus road, mountain and e-bike routes.
Altenmarkt is the town, with the station and the deanery church, and its local slopes are the gentle Radstadt-Altenmarkt area. Zauchensee, 10 km south at 1,350 metres, has the more demanding skiing.
Yes. Altenmarkt station is on the Ennstal line, though only regional trains stop. From Salzburg Hbf you usually change at Bischofshofen, and bus 2 connects the airport with the main station.
Skiing, mostly. It is the home of the Atomic ski factory and is linked with the racers Hermann Maier and Michael Walchhofer, and nearby Zauchensee hosts World Cup races.
A few things. The Erlebnis-Therme Amadé spa is the obvious one, and the Hoamathaus, a museum in a miners' house from around 1408, is another; check opening times before you go.
