Matrei in Osttirol is a market town in the Hohe Tauern that suits walkers and ski-tourers wanting a working-town base. It sits in the valley at 975 m rather than on the snow, so the big peaks are a drive or a walk away, and the homes here are mostly small.
Matrei is a market town of just under 4,700 people, in the Lienz district and the Hohe Tauern range. The municipality covers about 278 square kilometres and climbs to the glaciated Großvenediger, at more than 3,600 m, so the town is a valley base with high mountains behind it. It is one of the places where visitors can get into the Hohe Tauern National Park. Homes are spread around the town, mostly small, and some have a sauna or a private pool. Tourism, seasonal farming and forestry are the main livelihoods, which gives it the feel of a place that works all year. Check opening times before an off-season visit.

The main peak of the Venediger Group and the highest point of Matrei's municipal area; its glaciated summit lies in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Matrei lies about 29 km north of Lienz in the Hohe Tauern, and the Felbertauern road tunnel, built in 1967, greatly improved access to the area. Work out the drive from your chosen airport before booking, and plan to arrive by car.
Summer suits hiking, cycling and mountain biking, with the high peaks of the national park above the valley. Winter brings skiing, cross-country and winter hiking across East Tyrol's five ski areas. Between the two seasons, check what is open before you travel.
Yes. The town sits at 975 m inside the Hohe Tauern range, and East Tyrol has 21 long-distance trails and more than 260 peaks over 3,000 m. The 75 km Iseltrail starts in Lienz, about 29 km south.
It is a market town more than a resort. East Tyrol has five ski areas and about 400 km of cross-country trails, but Matrei itself is a working valley town at 975 m rather than a purpose-built snow village.
Small as a town, huge as an area. Just under 4,700 people live in a municipality of about 278 square kilometres that runs up to the Großvenediger, at more than 3,600 m. Our homes cluster around the town itself.
