Nufenen is a Walser village of about 150 people at 1,568 metres, the second-highest in the Rheinwald, on the left bank of the Hinterrhein opposite the mouth of the Areua. Walser settlers from Pomatt arrived around 1280, and for centuries the village lived from farming, mainly cattle, and traffic over the San Bernardino Pass. Its core has a plain Reformed church from 1643 and several substantial old houses. Since 2019 it has been part of the municipality of Rheinwald, and Splügen is now the valley's centre. The homes are grouped together in the village, and several sleep six or more.
