Villas in Mojácar, Almería, suit couples and families of up to six who want a pool and an easy run to a sandy beach. Mojácar comes in two parts, a hill village and a beach strip about 2 km apart, so where your home sits matters.
Mojácar is really two places. The pueblo clings to a rocky hillside at the foot of the Sierra Cabrera, with an old fountain of twelve spouts on Calle la Fuente. Below it, Mojácar Playa runs along the coast, a long line of mostly sandy beaches with a promenade, sunbeds and some built-up stretches. The homes are mostly down towards the coast, south of the village, rather than in the old streets. Every one has a pool and air conditioning, and none sleeps more than six. A local bus links the village and the beach areas, which helps for evenings in the pueblo.
A beach beside the old Torre de Macenas, a tower built during the reign of Carlos III.
Neighbouring town with the nearest marina, about 15 km from Ventanicas beach, worth an evening walk around the boats.
Almería is the nearest airport, about 52 minutes by car. Buses from the airport go via Vera and take well over two hours, with about one a day, so hire a car. Murcia is the next option, a much longer trip.
Yes, pools are standard here: every home in our Mojácar choice has one, plus air conditioning and outside space. Sizes run from couples' places up to homes for six across two or three bedrooms, with nothing larger.
Mostly sand. Las Ventanicas is a sandy beach of about 300 metres where the promenade starts, sheltered by a breakwater, while Lance Nuevo mixes sand and pebbles. Bring water shoes if you head for the stonier patches.
Stay near the Playa for beach days and the village for views and old streets. The two are roughly 2 km apart, and a local bus links them, so you can dine up the hill without driving back down.
