Guialmons suits a large group wanting a quiet farming hamlet in inland Catalonia, with castles and monasteries close by. It is not on the coast, so beach days mean a drive, and choice here is very small.
Guialmons is a tiny settlement in the municipality of Les Piles, in the Conca de Barberà district of northern Tarragona province. The whole municipality has just over 200 residents and lives on dryland farming, mainly wheat and barley. Guialmons keeps the Romanesque church of Santa María and slight remains of a castle first recorded in 1080, while Biure de Gaià, in the same municipality, has a castle documented in 1072 that now looks more like a palace. Summers are hot and winters cold, with fog in the low ground. Homes here are big, sleeping up to twelve in six bedrooms.
The great Cistercian monastery of the Conca de Barberà, set beside Catalonia's largest holm oak forest reserve.
The district capital in the Francolí valley, with vineyards of the local wine denomination, including the red Trepat grape, around it.
Reus is the nearest airport to Tarragona, with Barcelona the other main option, and Guialmons sits in the Catalan interior, well away from the coast. A car is essential in this rural area, for shopping as much as for sightseeing.
No. Guialmons is in the Conca de Barberà, an inland district in the north of Tarragona province, where the land is flat or gently rolling between 350 and 600 metres up. Treat it as a countryside stay and drive to the coast for beach days.
Several, mostly medieval. The hamlet has a Romanesque church and castle remains, Biure de Gaià has its restored castle, and the Cistercian Route links Poblet with the monasteries of Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges. Les Piles holds its main festival on 13 and 14 September.
