Los Urrutias suits families wanting a quiet, small Mar Menor village with a marina and grey-sand beaches. The homes are close together and most have a pool; check each listing. The lagoon here has suffered algae blooms and fish deaths, so the sea is not the main draw.
Los Urrutias is a village of about 1,150 people on the western edge of the Mar Menor, part of the municipality of Cartagena. It takes its name from its first inhabitants, of Basque origin: military men named Urrutia settled here after the Carlist Wars. The shore is a row of grey-sand beaches split up by stone jetties, with a marina, a couple of hotels, restaurants and supermarkets. Evenings mean the village restaurants and the marina, and the village has grown through property investment since the early 2000s. El Carmolí hill nearby is an old volcano, and the protected Lo Poyo salt marsh lies between the village and Los Nietos. Winters are mild and summers are hot.

You can, but the lagoon has suffered algae blooms and oxygen loss that killed fish, so check local water notices first. A private pool is the safer bet, and most homes here have one; check each listing.
