Szczyrk is a Beskid Śląski ski town suited to groups wanting over 60 km of runs in winter and day hikes up Skrzyczne in summer. Most homes sleep eight or more. Without a car, getting here from an airport means a slow bus trip via Bielsko-Biała.
Szczyrk is a town of under 6,000 people stretched along the valley of the Żylica river, between the two mountain ranges that surround it. Skrzyczne, at 1,257 metres, and Klimczok, at 1,117 metres, are the peaks that dominate it. Permanent settlement goes back to the 16th century, when people farmed and raised sheep; timber followed, sawmills multiplied in the 19th century, and tourism took off in the 1920s, when industrialists built villas and mountain hostels. Today it is a winter sports centre with 30 ski lifts, and Poland's Winter Olympic athletes train here. The homes sit close together in the valley. Many have gardens and some have a sauna.
