Wieringen is a former island in Noord-Holland, a quiet base where the Afsluitdijk begins at Den Oever. The homes have gardens rather than pools, and evenings are low key, so it suits slow stays more than a lively break.
Wieringen was an island until dikes and drainage joined it to the mainland between 1924 and 1932, and it is not entirely flat: low mounds of boulder clay from the Ice Age rise out of the farmland. Villages include Den Oever, Hippolytushoef, Oosterland and Westerland. Den Oever grew as a fishing village in the late Middle Ages and sits at the western end of the Afsluitdijk, where the sluices let the IJsselmeer drain into the Wadden Sea. The homes here are grouped together, mostly small and many with a garden, none with a pool. Evenings are quiet, and out of season you will share the island with few visitors.
Former fishing village at the start of the Afsluitdijk, with the Stevin lock and De Hoop, a wooden smock mill dating to 1654.
The 32 km dam running from Den Oever to Zurich in Friesland, opened in 1933, with a monument at the spot where the last gap was closed.
The island lies across the Marsdiep channel, which separates it from Wieringen and the mainland.
Den Oever lies about 18 km east of Den Helder and marks the western end of the Afsluitdijk, the 32 km dam that runs to Zurich in Friesland. A car is the easiest way to get around the island and its villages.
Not any more. Wieringen was cut off by a storm flood in the Middle Ages and was joined to the mainland again between 1924 and 1932 through dikes, drainage and landfill. The Afsluitdijk was completed in 1932.
It is a 32 km dam that starts at Den Oever on Wieringen and runs to Zurich in Friesland. It closed off the Zuiderzee, so the water on one side is the IJsselmeer and on the other the Wadden Sea.
A few low ones. The land is not entirely flat, because mounds of boulder clay left by the Ice Age break up the farmland, and the name is thought to come from an old word meaning height.
No, not as a rule. They mostly have gardens, sleep around four to six, and a few take larger groups. Anyone who wants a private pool will find more choice elsewhere in the region.
