Montgenèvre suits skiers who want a high French base at 1,860 metres with slopes linked into Italy's Via Lattea. The village sits on the pass at the Italian border, and Turin airport is about 1 hour 25 minutes by car. It is a small place of under 500 residents, so choice in the village itself is limited.
Montgenèvre is a village of under 500 residents at the top of the Col de Montgenèvre, on the border with Italy. The RN94 climbs the pass through the village, though a tunnel now takes through traffic beneath it. Built in 1907, it claims to be one of the first ski resorts in France. Its slopes link with Claviere, just over the border, and on into the Via Lattea, with more than 400 km of pistes. The beginner slopes double as an 18-hole golf course split between France and Italy. The homes are grouped together and sleep four to eight; check each listing for a pool or sauna.
A small Italian resort just over the border, included in the same Monts de la Lune lift pass; Olympic cross-country teams practised there in 2006.
The Italian Via Lattea resort at 2,035 metres whose slopes hosted alpine ski events at the 2006 Winter Olympics.
The nearby French town with an SNCF railway station; a bus service connects it with the resort.
Turin airport is the nearest international airport, about 101 km away or roughly 1 hour 25 minutes by car. By rail, buses connect the resort with Briançon station in France and with Oulx station in Italy, which sits on the line through Turin and Modane.
Winter is the main season, with Via Lattea runs climbing to around 2,800 metres and about 70 km of cross-country trails in the resort. Off the pistes there are walking paths, climbing, snowshoeing and dog-sledding.
Yes. Montgenèvre is the only French resort connected to the Olympic domain of Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx and Sansicario, part of the Via Lattea, or Milky Way, a cross-border area with more than 400 km of runs.
Turin. It is the nearest international airport, about 101 km away and roughly 1 hour 25 minutes by car. By rail, buses link the resort with Briançon station and Oulx station.
The village stands at 1,860 metres, higher than Claviere at 1,760 metres or Sauze d'Oulx at 1,509 metres across the border, and the Via Lattea lifts reach close to 2,800 metres.
Good enough for most. There are about 70 km of cross-country trails in the resort alongside 85 km of alpine runs, and Olympic cross-country teams trained at neighbouring Claviere in 2006.
