Lacanau's lake shore suits families who want calm lake swimming and forest cycle paths, a short drive from the surf at Lacanau-Océan. Our homes are mostly houses with gardens between the lake and Lacanau village. The trade-off: you are not on the ocean, and none of these homes has air conditioning.
Lac de Lacanau covers about 20 km² behind the wooded Atlantic dunes, between the village of Lacanau and its surf resort, Lacanau-Océan, 13 km apart by road. Le Moutchic on the north shore has a long beach, supervised in summer, and water sports. Our homes are on the quieter eastern side, between the lake and the village with its Saturday market, mostly family houses with gardens and a few with pools. The lake has none of the ocean's waves or baïnes, the currents that make the Atlantic beaches tricky with small children. Evenings are quiet; the bars are at Lacanau-Océan. From October to March many restaurants and hire businesses cut their hours.
Surf resort 13 km from the village, with La Grande Plage for beginners, rescuers on duty in summer and baïnes, strong currents, to watch for.
North shore beach with lifeguards in summer, paddleboards, canoes, sailing and a shaded picnic area. Parking fills up in high season, so cycle if you can.
The largest natural freshwater lake lying wholly in France, linked to Lacanau's by the Canal des Étangs. Maubuisson's fine sand beach is supervised in summer.
Bordeaux-Mérignac airport is about 50 km away, around 50 to 55 minutes by car, and direct flights from London Gatwick take under two hours. Bus 421 runs from Bordeaux Saint-Jean station to Lacanau-Océan, but you will want a car; once settled, cycle paths cover much of the area.
July and August are peak season, when the resort's population grows many times over, and none of these homes has air conditioning. Swimming is good from June into October, though Le Moutchic's lifeguards finish at the end of August. From October to March many restaurants and hire businesses cut their hours, but the village's Saturday market runs all year.
Yes, especially with young children. The lake has none of the ocean's waves, the beach at Le Moutchic has lifeguards in summer, and the homes are mostly houses with gardens. The Atlantic beaches at Lacanau-Océan are different, with baïnes, strong currents, to watch for.
Stay by the lake for calm water, space and woods. Stay in Lacanau-Océan to surf and walk to the beach, the shops and the bars that fill up in the evening. The village and the ocean resort are 13 km apart on the D6.
Yes, for arriving and for supermarkets, Bordeaux and day trips. Day to day, many people cycle instead: Lacanau has plenty of safe cycle paths, a forest route crosses the state forest, and a coastal path runs from Lacanau-Océan to Cap Ferret.
Yes. The lake has two main beaches, Grande Escourre and Le Moutchic. Le Moutchic is supervised daily from late June to the end of August, with weekend cover from late May. Sailing, paddleboards, canoes and pedalos can be hired on the lake.
