Guéthary suits couples and surfers who want a small house in a former whaling village, 12 minutes by car from Biarritz Airport. Parlementia and Cénitz are among its surf spots. Homes here are small, mostly for two, so families of five or more should look elsewhere.
Guéthary is the smallest village on the Basque coast, a commune of around 1,300 people on barely 1.4 square kilometres. It began as a whaling port, and fishing, whaling above all, paid for the parish: an old lookout, still standing, was used to spot whales and pirates, and the port was built steeply so whales could be hauled out. Tuna and sardines followed, then writers and artists. The fronton in the centre is home to Olharroa, a pelota club founded in 1922. The museum in Villa Saraléguinéa shows Roman finds and work by the sculptor Swiecinski. The coastal path runs through. The homes sit together in the village.
The neighbouring commune, about 1.8 km away, close enough for a short drive or bike ride when you want a change of scene.
About 7 km away, a full town compared with Guéthary; its airport is about 12 minutes from the village by car.
Fly to Biarritz Airport, about 12 minutes away by car. The line 3 bus runs from the airport roughly every half hour and takes about 20 minutes. In the village itself you can manage on foot, but a car helps for days out along the coast.
Yes. The commune has three named surf spots: Parlementia, Avalanche and Cénitz. The village has built a reputation as a beach destination in recent years, and life here runs between surf sessions and games of pelota.
Better for couples. The homes here are small, mostly sleeping two and none more than four. It is a tiny commune with a steep old port, so larger families will find more room elsewhere on the coast.
Guéthary is a village of about 1,300 people built around a former whaling port, while Biarritz, about 7 km away, is a full town. Pick Guéthary for a slower base with Biarritz a short drive off.
