Largentière suits families and groups who want a garden and a pool around an old silver-mining town in the narrow Ligne valley. Its château, built against the rock, looks down over the town. The town has no railway and Lyon airport is two and a half hours' drive, so you need a car.
Largentière is a small town of about 1,450 people, the least populated subprefecture in France, squeezed into the narrow valley of the Ligne about 10 km south-west of Aubenas. Its name comes from the silver-bearing lead mined here between the 10th and 15th centuries for the counts of Toulouse and the bishops of Viviers. The château, begun as a bishop's tower in the 13th century, stands against the rock above a town that rises in tiers, with the 13th-century church of Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers and a Renaissance town hall below. Silk mills once kept it busy; tourism does now. The homes are scattered around the town, all with a garden and most with a pool; check each listing.
The larger town about 10 km to the north-east, about 20 minutes by car, or around 40 minutes on the hourly bus.
The town where the Gorges de l'Ardèche begin and the main base for canoeing in the area, near the 60-metre Pont d'Arc arch.
Lyon airport is about two and a half hours away by car. By rail, the quickest route is a train to Montélimar and a taxi on. Largentière lost its station in 1982 and is reached only by road, so plan on hiring a car.
The name refers to silver. Between the 10th and 15th centuries silver-bearing lead was mined from veins in the local sandstone, and the town was earlier known as Segualeriae. The Tour Argentière gathered the mines' output for guarded transport.
It is a fortress that grew from a square tower built by the bishop of Viviers on a spur above the Ligne, near the main mine. Enlarged in the 15th and 16th centuries, it has been a court, prison and hospital, and is a listed historic monument.
Only slowly. The station was demolished in 1982, so it is road only. An hourly bus links Aubenas with Largentière in about 40 minutes, and from Lyon airport public transport via Montélimar takes over three hours.
Largentière suits a quieter stay in a narrow valley town with medieval sights. Vallon-Pont-d'Arc is the hub for canoeing the Ardèche gorges, so choose it if time on the river matters most.
