About Sastamala
Sastamala was formed in 2009 when Vammala merged with Äetsä and Mouhijärvi, so it is a cluster of older centres rather than one compact place. The Kokemäenjoki river runs through the area, and Karkku, on Lake Rautavesi about 13 km north of the town centre, has a medieval church from the late 15th century. The homes spread over roughly ten kilometres. Most have a sauna and many a fireplace, while a private pool is rare. Evenings are a matter of the sauna and your own table, and it is wise to check what is open before an off-season visit.
