Padasjoki suits families and boaters who want a sauna cottage on Lake Päijänne, with the national park islands offshore. Every home here has a sauna and most have a fireplace. The homes are scattered around the municipality, though, so the harbour is usually a drive away rather than a stroll.
Padasjoki is a municipality on Lake Päijänne, and its guest harbour, about 2 km from the centre, faces Päijänne National Park, a chain of islands formed by an Ice Age esker ridge with sandy coves and rocky shores. The harbour has a summer restaurant with a beach terrace, a beach, a shop, boat taxis and cruises out to the park. Kelvenne, a short boat ride away, is about 8 km long and known for hiking and sandy, lagoon-like beaches. These homes are spread around Padasjoki rather than in the centre. Each has a sauna, nearly all a fireplace, and all sleep between four and eight.

City about 47 minutes away by car, with an LSL bus to central Padasjoki that takes around an hour.
Fly to Helsinki. Padasjoki is about two hours by car from Helsinki city, and a direct bus from Helsinki runs only once a day, taking around two and a half hours. From Lahti the drive is about 47 minutes. With buses that infrequent, a hire car is the practical choice.
Come in summer. The national park is suited above all to visitors arriving by water, the harbour restaurant is a summer operation, and the harbour holds various events over the summer. Later in the year expect fewer services, though a sauna in every cottage and a fireplace in most make a quiet autumn week easy.
Yes. Cruises to the park leave from Padasjoki harbour, which sits directly in front of the islands, and boat taxis run from there too. Kelvenne, an island of about 8 km with hiking trails, is a short boat ride away.
There is one at the harbour, next to the summer restaurant and its terrace. For more choice, take a boat to Kelvenne, an island known for sandy, lagoon-like beaches.
Drive, ideally: it takes about 47 minutes. An LSL bus runs from Lahti to the centre of Padasjoki in roughly an hour, but only every four hours, and it will not take you to a lakeside cottage.
You can, with a permit. Permits are sold in Padasjoki at the summer shop by the boat traffic dock, and the guest harbour has fuel and a concrete boat ramp if you bring your own boat.
