Joensuu suits sauna and lake holidays in North Karelia, with its own airport and Koli National Park about an hour's drive north. Every home has a sauna and most have a fireplace. The homes are spread far across the countryside around the city, though, and many have no wifi.
Joensuu is the regional capital of North Karelia, a university city of about 79,000 founded in 1848 where the Pielisjoki enters Lake Pyhäselkä, on the lake's northern shore. Its name is Karelian for river's mouth. The city is known as the Forest Capital of Europe; for an evening there is Museum Eliel and the theatre, and Ilosaarirock is among its best-known annual events. Gravel and bikepacking trails run out into the surrounding forest. Winters are long, cold and snowy. Our homes are scattered widely through the forests and lakes around Joensuu, some a long drive out, so think of the city as the place to land and shop.
National park of 3,000 hectares on the western shore of Lake Pielinen, 63 km from Joensuu, best reached on the asphalted Kolintie, Road 504.
The northern arm of Lake Saimaa, on whose northern shore Joensuu stands at the mouth of the Pielisjoki.
Joensuu Airport is about 11 km from the centre, and direct flights from Helsinki take about 65 minutes. Trains from Helsinki take about 4.5 hours. With homes spread so widely, a car is essential.
Winters are long, cold and snowy. In midwinter an ice road crosses Lake Pielinen between Koli and Vuonislahti, and weekend shuttle buses run from Joensuu to Koli. On the sand roads around the park, studded tyres are always recommended.
About 63 km, roughly an hour's drive north. Take Kolintie, Road 504, rather than the narrow, winding sand roads, and expect the car parks near the summit of Ukko-Koli to be the most popular.
Fly in about 65 minutes or take the train, which takes around 4.5 hours. By car it is about 440 km and roughly five hours, which makes the short flight the easy choice.
All of them do, and most also have a fireplace. Wifi is less certain: many homes do not list it, so check before booking if you need to work.
For flying in, yes, with the airport about 11 km from the centre. For the region itself, the homes' spread matters more: some are a long drive out, so pick one near the lakes or forest you plan to explore.
