Iitti works for families after a sauna cottage on the lakes about 90 minutes' drive from Helsinki Airport. Nearly all homes have a sauna, and a few take large groups. It is lake country cut by a railway and a main road rather than wilderness, so expect neighbours.
Iitti is a municipality of about 6,300 people on the Kymi river, part of Päijät-Häme since 2021. Kausala, by the railway and national road 12, is the municipal centre. About 7.5 km north lies the old church village, ringed by lakes and once voted the most attractive church village in Finland, with a wooden church from 1693. Lakes Urajärvi and Pyhäjärvi have been used since the Stone Age, and boating routes on Pyhäjärvi link the church village with Kouvola and, through the Kimola canal, Heinola. The homes are grouped a few kilometres out from Kausala. Evenings are quiet, and much of what there is to do runs in summer.
Lakeside village around the old parish church, once voted Finland's most attractive church village, and home of the June music festival.
Recreation island in Pyhäjärvi with trails, a jetty, a campfire area and a prehistoric hill fort with fine views; summer events such as concerts are often held here.
On the Kymi river about 30 km north of Kausala, with a lakeshore summer restaurant; the Kimola canal bypasses the hydroelectric plant here.
Fly to Helsinki. The drive from Helsinki Airport to Iitti takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. Trains from Tikkurila stop at Kausala, about 2 hours 35 minutes in all. The cottages sit outside Kausala and local transport is dial-a-ride, so a car makes life much easier.
June is festival month, with chamber music in the wooden church at the church village, and summer brings concerts on Hiidensaari and boat trips on Pyhäjärvi. The lakeshore restaurant at Vuolenkoski is a summer place, so out of season treat Iitti as a sauna and fireside stay.
Yes. Helsinki Airport is about 1 hour 30 minutes away by car, and nearly all the homes around Iitti have a sauna. Expect lake country with roads and a railway nearby, not deep forest.
Each June. It is mostly chamber music, held mainly in the wooden church of 1693 in the old church village, and some concerts are free. Buses run to it from Kausala.
Trains between Helsinki and Kouvola stop at Kausala, the centre of Iitti, and the journey from Helsinki Airport via Tikkurila takes about 2 hours 35 minutes. You will still want a car or taxi for the last stretch to a cottage.
A recreation island in Lake Pyhäjärvi, north of the Iitti church village. It has trails, a jetty, a campfire spot and a prehistoric hill fort with fine views, and concerts are often held there in summer. Leave the old stones where they are.
