Äänekoski is a working industrial town of about 17,500 people. The centre sits between the Ääneselkä part of Lake Keitele and Lake Kuhnamo, and the municipality has some 170 lakes, with about a fifth of its area water. The forest, pulp and paper industry is a major employer, alongside the tractor maker Valtra and Valio's dairy, which makes Aura cheese. The municipality covers about 1,140 km², and the homes are scattered widely across it. Nearly all have both a sauna and a fireplace, and none has a pool. Evenings are quiet.
