Abertamy is a small Ore Mountains town with its own ski area, about 15 km north of Karlovy Vary. It suits couples and small groups who want a sauna after a day outside, and no railway or major road passes through.
Abertamy lies at 840 m on the Bystřice River, with about 800 residents, and its highest point is Plešivec at 1,028 m. Miners settled here between 1525 and 1529, and the Mauritius Mine, once the largest tin mine in the Ore Mountains, is open to the public. The late Gothic Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers dates from 1534. The homes are small, mostly sleeping four, nearly all with a sauna and none with a pool, and they lie close together in and around the town. The area is used for summer sports as well as skiing.
