'Eclectic mix of modern and ancient cultures'

Croatia is a southern Central European Country bordering with Hungary on the north. Its southern and western flanks border the Adriatic Sea, and it also shares a sea border with Italy in the Gulf of Trieste.

The main attractions in Croatia are the pebble beaches and the innumerable number of isolated and untouched islands. If you are looking to spend some quiet time away from the crowd and with a lot of sunshine, then Croatia is the place to be. The local populace is extremely friendly and helpful.

If you are a person who likes the land more (like me) then plan on visiting either Zagreb or Split. If you want to be close to the sea, the best option is to get a charter yacht. These yachts often come with a crew but if you have sailing experience and have a license then you can get your own yacht.

For people who love the land more, get a villa in the place where you plan to spend your holiday. Villas are available locally or can be booked online. Again you have the choice of a household help or you can go about the chores yourself. I and my family of three had an excellent time in the villa we hired in Split. We had a whale of a time in the seven days we spent there.

Split is situated on the south west coast of Croatia and is a combination of old world charm and modern architecture. Not many tourists are aware of the convenience of Split while setting up a base for Croatian holiday. We soon set up a routine of activities like tennis, swimming and touring during the day and enjoying the best Croatian food for dinner. After the morning round of exercise we visited the ancient city of Salona during the first day. Next days plan were the beaches. Split has five beautiful beaches nearby, Zlatini Rat, Brela, Pakleni Island, Solta and Milna. The third day we planned on cooking dinner at home and visiting the local market. The fish and the tomatoes were truly scrumptious. We spent the evening visiting the promenade which has many interesting shops. And guess who we ran into there. Goran Ivanisevic, the tennis star. Yes, Goran is a resident of Split and if you are lucky enough, you might catch a glimpse of him. The fourth day we had planned for Split was spent marvelling the ancient architecture of Diocletian's Palace, now a UNESCO world heritage site.

The last two days of our stay were planned for Zagreb. The capital of Croatia, it houses about a quarter of the country's population and is a thriving energetic, inland city that warrants at least a brief visit. This is where you will find the best museums, restaurants, and shopping that Croatia has to offer. The city is divided in to two main sections, Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and Donji Grad (Lower Town). We started from the centre of the city which has the most of the tourist attractions.

Then we moved to the upper town which has most of the modern attractions. The lower town which has the Zagreb's Cathedral and parliament building was planned for the last day.

The overall holiday experience that we had was something we could never expect from a holiday anywhere else. The holiday was not too heavy on the wallet and the experience was something that was out of the box. An eclectic mix of modern and ancient cultures, Croatia is sure to be first choice the next time we plan a vacation.
